Chair Yoga at MonmouthFlow: A Class for Every Body
You Don't Need a Mat to Do Yoga. You Just Need to Show Up.
If you've ever thought yoga wasn't for you because of your knees, your balance, a surgery, a diagnosis, or simply because you weren't sure you could get back up from the floor we want you to read this.
Chair Yoga is yoga. Full stop.
It's not a consolation prize or a watered-down version of the "real thing." It's a thoughtful, effective practice that meets your body exactly where it is and invites it to open, strengthen, and breathe.
On Monday, July 27th at 10:00 AM, MonmouthFlow Yoga + Wellness in Shrewsbury, NJ is hosting a Chair Yoga class led by the extraordinary Stacy Newfeld a yoga teacher, meditation guide, and sound healer with over 30 years of experience. This is a class you won't want to miss, and one you absolutely can do.
What Is Chair Yoga, Really?
Chair Yoga adapts traditional yoga poses so that they can be practiced seated in a chair, or standing while using a chair for support. The movements, the breath, the intention it's all still there. What changes is the access point.
You're still stretching. You're still breathing with purpose. You're still moving through sequences designed to open your body and calm your nervous system. You're just doing it in a way that's kinder to your joints and more supportive of your balance.
For anyone navigating:
- Joint pain or arthritis
- Recovery from injury or surgery
- Balance concerns
- Limited mobility
- Chronic pain conditions
- Or simply a body that needs a gentler approach right now
…Chair Yoga isn't just appropriate. It's ideal.
The Benefits Go Way Beyond the Chair
Don't let the seated nature of the practice fool you. Chair Yoga delivers real, measurable benefits physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Strength and Stability
Holding poses while seated or standing with chair support challenges your muscles in meaningful ways. Over time, students often report increased core strength, better posture, and a greater sense of physical confidence.
Joint Mobility Without the Strain
Traditional yoga poses can be hard on knees, hips, and wrists. Chair Yoga adapts those same poses to reduce pressure on the joints while still building range of motion and flexibility.
Stress Reduction and Blood Pressure Support
Research has consistently shown that yoga including chair-based variations can reduce cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, and support the parasympathetic nervous system. When you breathe intentionally and move mindfully, your entire body responds.
Balance and Fall Prevention
For students who are concerned about balance, the chair provides a reliable point of contact. Over time, the practice builds the proprioceptive awareness and lower body strength that contributes to better balance overall.
Community and Wellbeing
Some of the most powerful benefits of any yoga class are the ones that happen between people. Showing up in a room with others who are also committed to their health and growth that matters. It creates connection, consistency, and a sense of belonging that contributes deeply to overall wellbeing.
